As a photographer first and an upright citizen proud to uphold the law when it makes sense, second, I was fascinated by the attitude of Google's minnows in this article in "The Register":

Fascinating and, I suppose, I shouldn't be too surprised at yet another incident! Mind you, this story is set in Edinburgh, not my favourite place.
Now, in Glasgow, the caretaker at the old Beresford Hotel in Sauchiehall Street (http://www.architecturescotland.co.uk/buildings/139/The_Beresford_.html) saw me taking pictures of the outside of the building and asked me what I was doing etc. When I explained that I'm a sucker for anything Arts Decorativ (as the French foppishly say), he invited me in and I got some wonderful interior pics too. What an enlightened Scotsman and I'm grateful to him for making my day.
Bests to all.

Anon, some might say thats cynical.
I've had the special branch visit too, because of a newsgroup comment about Police driving on that hotbed of revolution group, UK.rec.cycling!
They actually produced a copy of the posting from Google Groups, with some other 'data' on it, data from the Google keyword scanning service perhaps?
So the street level spy's are about, wonderful, just what MI5/6 and all the other snoopers need to plan things, no wonder the ex-cia people with google are so popular, selling the data to gov't depts along with seeking just whet they want next. They also monitor the newsgroups and feed back to local police anything that triggers their Echelon like keywords dictionary system, resulting in home visits for those that make adverse comments about things like police driving standards on public highways...BTDTHTHV!
