M&S HQ at Paddington Basin
11.24 am on 6th June, 2008, a friend and I were challenged by a security guard who informed us that taking photos of the M&S HQ was prohibited. We were using handheld small compact cameras, not SLRs with tripods. We were stood on the public right of way that surrounds the building.
When asked by what auithority photography was forbidden he was able to site only his supervisor's orders and was unaware of the law.
Subsequently we called in at the British Waterways information barge and enquired about any prohibitions on photography in Paddington Basin. The information officer informed us that there were none whatsoever but that she had sometimes seen security guards stopping photography.

Security guards are even worse than police officers as they have no proper training and simply make it up as they go along. The simplest way of dealing with them (assuming that you are on a public highway etc) is to tell them to piss off.
I will contact M&S and see what their explanation is.

Photo of the offending guard, photo's of building?
IF its a public area how about a meeting and shoot, is there much of interest, people/buildings/boats to photograph?
